Missy, Your brick may well have been made by St. Louis Vitrfied & Fire Brick Co of St Louis, MO. or Evans and Howard, St Louis, or General Refractories of St Louis or HK Porter of St Louis,MO (ref. Graves - "Brick Brands of the United States".
The reason for so many Companies making the same "St Louis" is that there were a lot of mergers in that business and it's not easy to say what the actual name of the company was at the time the brick was made. The SM refers to " Steel Mixture"
