Ashland Crown

We found a old brick/rock that has "Ashland Crown" on it. We live in Dante, Va. We found the brick/rock washed up in the creek near where we live. We were wandering what it means?

  1. Ashland Crown is a fire brick made by the Ashland Fire Brick Co. in Ashland, KY. The term "CROWN" refers to the location in the structure (kiln, furnace or whatever) that the brick is intended to be used in. To make more sense of this, some manufacturers published plans for building certain types of furnaces or kilns, and the brick used in these structures may need to be of a particular composition for the level of heat and kinds of material that are being heated in these structures, as well as the shape of the brick needed for the fit. The name enables workmen to place the proper brick in the proper place ... following a sort of a "paint-by-number" scheme.

  2. Crown fire brick could be placed near the top of a furnace or other structure and it could have a side that narrows from a certain thickness to a less narrow thickness. This would enable a builder of an oven to build a more effective crown or curved formation in a structure. Fire bricks are often much heavier than regular brick as they need to withstand high temperatures, such as the fire bricks that were used in some industrial settings.

  3. We have several of these bricks from an old cement plant in Oregon.
