I have been researching my family history, and have found that my great-great grandfather patented the downdraft kiln, and was president of the Johnsonburg Vitrified Brickworks in Johnsonburg, PA, and then The Shawmut Paving Brickworks in Shawmut, PA. I was hoping someone here might have some history of either brickworks, and would also like to obtain a Shawmut brick, if any are available.
I am going there in the next few months and was meaning to take a walk down to the old brickyard there because my grandfather's dad was Sydney Yates son of Alfred Yates. I too was looking to get a brick...if I happen to find any I would be glad to send you one :-)
ReplyDeleteI never found any bricks work which I done before. But I am glad to read the works of setaynala. I am also sure that If Anything happen with me then I will also show out them at this place as soon as.
ReplyDeleteI live right down the street from the old brick works and remember the pillars in the old cow pasture. I've seen many pictures but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI was there today! There are many bricks produced bt Elk Fire Brick in St. Mary's, PA that were part of the kilns. I'm still looking for a "Shawmut" setaynala@hotmail.com

ReplyDeleteI just found a brick today in my cousins yard in Green Ridge in Scranton PA. They are digging to put in a pool and I found a brick about 4 feet under ground level.
ReplyDeleteI found a Johnsonburg Pa brick today in a stream in Altoona Pa. The stream has a bunch of bricks- actually 2 streams do here. They are from all over- one was Altoona and another was Johnstown in addition to the Johnsonburg.
