The flash flooding from tropical storm Arlene has freed some bricks from the earth. One brick labeled "LEMIEUX" was found in an area that had mills, button, bicycle rim, and other manufacturing buildings in the 1830's. I am curious about the origin of a seemingly French named manufacturer of brick that was found in the mountains of central Vermont.

ReplyDeleteWe don't have too much info on Lemieux except to say they were located in Bennington. . However, this excerpt from their "... Preservation Commission"'s meeting, may be of some help:

I find alot of these along the shores of the Walloomsac river in Bennington VT I obtained some information from the Bennington museum The brick yard was founded in the mid 1800's on Beech Street in Bennington, using clay found on the farm of the Thayer family. The brickyard was operated at various times by Louis Bleau,Frank Cromack, and the Caron and Lemieux family it ceased opertaion in 1948 after the death of Peter Lemieux. vt digger
