DON.BCo

I found a brick in Griswald CT from a chimney that was torn down. It had raised lettering DON.BCo. I asked the owner when home was built and he said the 1860's. I am new to collecting and would like your help.

  1. Hi Jerald,

DON.BCo is the Donnelly Brick Co.
    in Berlin, CT

We have some info on the website on Berlin here

    There's a picture of a DON.BCo here
However 1860 is too early for a branded Donnelly brick. I surmise that the DON.BCos you found may have been from a later modification or repair to the chimney.

  2. Hi Jer..., Your brick was made by the Donnelly Brick Co. of both Kensington and Berlin, CT
Chimneys, in time often need to be repointed or (at least) partially rebuilt because of weathering, cracking and
mortar joint problems. It seems as if the upper portions of the chimneys tend to fair worse in this regard. Thus the mason making the repair may utilize brick which are much newer than the pre existing chimney brick and ... also, ... newer than the building. I would suspect any chimney that old did not feature a liner.. In time there would be risk of a chimney fire and flames may find their way through a crack in the mortar joint. In consideration of this possibility, homeowners may have elected to replace the chimney with a flue liner.
It is also possible the chimney was added much later, in terms of the age of the building, if a new heating system was installed.

  3. I found a Don B. Co brick snorkeling in Block Island, RI. Would there be any records of where the brick may have been a part of? Lighthouse, shipwreck, other structure that fell into the sea..
