  1. your brick was made by the Laclede-Christy Clay Products Co. The Company started as the Laclede fire brick co in Cheltenham (St.Louis)MO in 1865. It became the Laclede-Christy company in 1928. It went out of business in the 1970's. There is no way to tell how old your brick is as that brand name was uesd for many years.

  13. My husband and I purchased a little white church in a small town in Southwest Indiana which was built in 1923. The fireplace box in the 'office" is lined with Laclede fire bricks.
After reading the info on this page, it appears these bricks were made before the company became Laclede-King in 1928.
As trivial as it may seem, it's fun to know a bit of history about the bricks housed within our home!

  30. PD,
According to Jim Graves, in his work Brick Brands of the United States, your brick may have been made by either H. K. Porter - Christy Works. or Lacleede - Christy Clay ProductsCo. both of St. Louis, MO.

... hope this may be helpful F.

  31. We have a brick sidewalk (1940's house outside of Memphis, TN) that is made of these Laclede bricks. Very cool, since I am originally from St. Louis and had stock in the Laclede Gas company.

  32. I found a brick along the shore of the Sangamon River just north of Springfield, Illinois. It said LACLEDE ST. LOUIS. It wasn't far from where a dam and Springfield's old waterworks were located until the 1930s. Didn't know how old it might be.

  33. That sounds really great. Bricks are special to me. When I met my wife she worked as a secretary for a great brick company near Seattle. Her bosses were sad to see her go but we moved over the mountains to a beautiful lake. That is where I first found antique bricks in our garden and other parts of the property. Part of a retaining wall was mostly bricks from different companies. I enjoyed learning more and hearing from people like you. God bless!
Being raised in Utah most older homes are brick because of the cold climate. Someone or family made a good living because of those red bricks.

  41. I found four pallets of Laclede King and A.J Green fire bricks in an abandoned warehouse. I also found a huge kiln pot in the same area. I think the bricks were going to be used for an oven of some kind that never happened. I am a huge brick collector and had never heard of either or seen any as most of mine are road pavers.
