TYGART

Hi,
I found a couple of fire bricks with the name Tygart on them near the foundation of an 1860s home in NJ. I did find reference to a Tygart Fire Brick company in Ohio. Does anyone have more info, or a photo, of their bricks?
Thanks,
Alan

  1. There was a brickworks in Hammond, WV (near Grafton) right along the Tygart river. I have seen bricks labeled 'Tygart' near there. Not a lot of info but maybe it can help.

  2. The Hammond Fire Brick Co. operated in Hammond,WV circa 1888-1935. They produced the TYGART brand fire brick. The company had several other plants, the longest operating of these was in Fairmont,WV circa 1899-1954

  4. Hi,

Jim Graves in his work "Brick Brands of the United States" indicates that the TYGART was a brand of brick manufactured by the Hammond Fire Brick Co. of Hammond, West Virginia. We don't know of any Tygart factories on Long Island. Thanks for visiting. - Fred

  5. Jim, Do you know if the brick yard you referred to in Fairmont,WV was actually in Colfax, WV? Colfax is on the Tygart Valley River, a few miles south of Fairmont. Hammond is further south. I'm from Fairmont; have been to the ruins of Hammond and know where the site was in Colfax; but I'm not aware of any brick works in Fairmont, proper.

  6. We were in Hammond less than a week ago. We located bricks w/Tygart, Fairmont WV & Bessemer stamped onto them. Was wondering what Bessemer was but can't find anything.

  7. I live near Hammond and found this link to an old photo labeled Fairmont, WV even though Hammond is close to Colfax. If you ever have a chance to visit, bring your four wheel drive and enjoy this beautiful setting for a ghost town.

  8. There was a fire brick company in Bessemer Alabama. Sometimes companies had other fire brick companies manufacture brick for them, as it was (and is) expensive to ship fire brick. Perhaps (and only a guess), the Bessemer company had Hammond Fire Brick make brick for them to ship to North East and Mid West customers.

  9. In response to the individual who found the TYGART brick on the shore in Long Island, I have read several places that Hammond (aka TYGART, HAMMOND,FAIRMONT....) Fire Brick Co. bricks were used in building the Empire State Building. I'm still researching to confirm but would explain a WV brick off the shore in NY.
