  1. Hi Brett, The Jackson Bros appear in an 1889 Albany City Directory. In 1895 John Jackson appears as a brickmaker. Drawing from a (year) 1900 ad. John H Jackson asserts the firm is a succession of Jackson Bros. and manufactures drain tile, red front and pressed brick, fire brick, glazed sewer pipe , oven tile, stove pipe chimney tops and side walk tile.
Are number of X's actually three? I'm familiar with an XXXX firebrick but haven't seen a XXX yet. Otherwise - I would say that pretty well ties together your findings. Thanks for visiting. Fred

  3. I recently bought on E Bay a newspaper ad from the 1800"s that says Established 1852 Jackson Brothers New York State Drain-Tile and Pipe Works Main Office 88 Third Avenue, Albany NY (Shows a picture of a round tile) Round, Sloe and Horse-Shoe Tile. Over 13 inches Long. by cargo or smallest quantities Price List on application. Prices that cannot be underquoted. Our new improved machinery makes a superior Round Tile, excelling anything offered before and at greatly reduced prices.First premium whenever exhibited. Also wholesale for the Akron Salt-Glazed Sewer Pipe.

Henry F French (Namesake - Thee French Drain) wrote a book in 1859 called Farm Drainage and in that book he said in 1855 he bought 1000 ft of 2" round drain tile to use on his farm in Exeter, NH. He said he had the drain tile shipped by rail from Albany NY. Could Jackson Brothers have been that company he got his tile from or were there other drain tile manufacturers?

In 1835 John Johnston from Geneva NY received 2 pattern drain tiles from Scotland and proceeded to a crockery maker in Waterloo, NY and had him make 3000 tiles to use in his fields.

I believe Jackson Brothers might have been one of the first, if not the first Drain Tile Manufacturer in America. Farm Drainage using clay drain tile was being used in England prior to 1835 but not yet in America.

Any information anyone has I would appreciate emailing me at stevea@grateproducts.com a sI am in the final stages of publishing a book entitled French Drain For Health.
