SHAWMUT PA

Kathryn from NYC writes:
Hello, I live in Staten Island, NY in a Victorian home built in 1893. The garden in front of our home is outfit with bricks, the ones that have a name written on it say CATSKILL; however, there's this one brick that says SHAWMUT PA. This is the only brick in the garden we could find with that name. I tried to google about the brick and found Shawmut, PA is now St. Mary's. I'm not sure where to look to find out info on the possible manufacturer or how old the brick itself might be. Any info you could share or point me in a direction to do more research would be appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Jim Graves, in his work Brick Manufacturers of the United States, indicates that the Shawmut was made by the Shawmut Clay Manufacturing Co. Of Shawmut, PA. He further indicates the firm had a location in St Marys as well. My Rand McNally road atlas indicate that only about 15 - 20 miles seperarate St Marys and Shawmut.
Th Catskill paver was made by the Eastern Paving Brick Co of Catskill, NY.
You may wish to check out an earlier blog entry on Catskill for more details. - Fred

  2. We just built a house in Fairport, NY. While digging for new landscaping found MANY bricks stamped Shawmut, PA. As I dig them up, I'm saving them. Had stacked 50 on the building site before we moved in but someone took them. Still have a dozen. Didn't know people collect different types of old bricks..interesting hobby.

  3. My great-great grandfather Alfred Yates was the general manager of the Shawmut Paving Brick Co. I was there today. Several of the stacks for the kilns are still standing and there are remnants of the kilns themselves. I am still looking for a Shawmut brick. setaynala@hotmail.com

  8. Hi..I grew up next to the old Shawmut brick plant. My siblings & I did a lot of fun on the walls but were always told to be careful around the stacks bc they were ready to fall at anytime. The stacks have now been taken down. My mom & son still live up there in the corner house.

  9. My immigrant family settled in Drummond, PA (up the road from Shawmut) around 1905-1908, and left after 1918. I visited this area first as a kid in 1957, came back in 1978 and 1985. The Shawmut Clay Kiln Works also made clay pipe that was used in the construction of the Panama Canal early 1900s.

  10. Redoing a BBQ in Wales mass. It was made entirely of these Shawmut PA bricks. We salvaged what we could for the fire pit. We noticed right away these bricks are much bigger and stronger then your average brick. I googled Shawmut PA brick but I couldn’t really find much about them other then this forum. Any info would be much appreciated.
