A.P. Green Empire D.P.

Sheila Dodd comments:
We found what looks like a well in our backyard when we were doing some digging. It is lined with bricks. One of the bricks has A.P. Green Empire D.P. on it. When were these made and are they still manufactured? Our house was built in the late 1800's to early 1900's.

  1. Hello Sheila,

The A.P.Greens are firebricks made by the A.P. Green Fire Brick Co. of Mexico, MO. The D. P. refers to "double press". The term EMPIRE differentiates the brick from other specification grades the company makes
and may relate to the source of the clay and the mixture thereof. ... and
    they are still in business.

  4. The orginal AP Green Refractories is no longer producing bricks. It shut down in Mexico, MO in 2002. I do not know if the bricks are worth any money. I would hold on to it and see if there are any others out there.

Good Evening, My son just found a brick that day AP Green Empire DP....in the bottom of a small creek bed of our farm. This brick almost has a granite like appearance with morter stuck to the back of it. We have a farm built approx. around the turn of the century. We live in south central WI. Any idea wha the brick is doing in the bottom of my creek bed that we opened up recently ??

  9. I just found an A.P. Green Empire D.P. brick in Port Dover Ontario. We have a history in this area with farm and home construction dating back to the 1812 era when the US invaded and burnt the town down during the war. I don't suspect the brick is that old but it would be interesting to know when it came from and how it got here.

  18. To anonymous August 11, 2012 8:06 PM: A.P. Green manufactured almost all of their brick for industrial use. They (and other manufacturers) would formulate the brick recipes to meet the needs of industries with different chemical resistances, temperature extremes, and other abnormal stresses. When formulating the recipes they would keep track of the changes by numbering. The brick with the number 4565 most probably refers to the 45th recipe try in 1965. When the brick would meet the specifications they were trying to achieve so that mass production could begin, they would give it an actual name such as Empire.

  31. I read that AP Green filed for bankruptcy in 2002 for asbestos claims so a trust was set up.
If the brick are in real good shape they're probaby OK but if they are crumbly around the edges don't expose the handling of them to children or teenagers, especially cutting or polishing. It takes 30 to 50 years for Mesothelioma to show up. So you'll be long gone before it effects them.
I've recently been diagnosed with it and 40 years ago I was wheeling these bricks out of kilns, that had fallien out.
Good luck be safe my friends.

I have found many of these Empire Bricks. At first I thought they said AP GREEN EMPIRE R.R. but they must say DP. Thanks for the info. These bricks seemed to have made it far and wide. They are still in very good shape. But I have no idea for the lifespan of a brick.

  56. AP Green Empire bricks are firebricks that would have been used in fireplaces, boilers, woodstoves, maybe on steam engine trains for the firebox. The companies currently making them sell them for about $4.25 each. Used, in good shape, maybe $1.00 each. The ones found in streams...questionable.
